Agoraphobia Treatment With NLP

by Alan Densky

Out of all the phobias, agoraphobia is truly one of the most debilitating. This stems from a deep fear of unfamiliar or potentially uncomfortable situations, and can grow to the point where a sufferer only feels safe inside their home. If you struggle with agoraphobia, you should not let this condition dominate you. You can understand this disorder and find out how to beat it by using hypnotherapy.

The word agoraphobia literally means "fear of the marketplace," but sufferers may feel scared in any situation with a crowd. These places are nearly always public settings or unfamiliar places away from home. Sufferers may be afraid of being in lines, airplanes, restaurants, shopping centers, or any location where they might not feel completely safe.

People with agoraphobia are afraid of having panicky feelings or anxiety attacks in a setting where it would be difficult or impossible for them to escape. People with agoraphobia usually lead happy and typical lives in the places where they feel secure, even visiting with guests and working from the security of their own homes. Unfortunately, agoraphobia can be so serious that sometimes sufferers will only feel safe in very confined spaces. One recently publicized case revealed a woman whose phobia was so severe that she would not emerge from her bathroom for several years, which damaged her health.

Agoraphobia often arises from other anxiety disorders and fears. For example, sufferers of social phobia frequently have agoraphobia as well because they are scared of having to socialize with other people. It may also stem from traumatic incidents such as experiencing an accident outside of the home. War veterans frequently develop the condition along with post-traumatic stress disorder. It can affect both men and women, though it is believed that agoraphobia is more common in women.

People afflicted with agoraphobia might believe that they risk humiliating themselves if they go out in public and have a panic attack. It can be embarrassing for a phobia sufferer to experience symptoms such as nervous breakdowns, trembling, or sweating and lose their self-control.

Agoraphobia is frequently treated with medication or therapy. It can be quite difficult to treat because sufferers may have other anxiety disorders and root causes for their fears.

The reason why phobia sufferers cannot seem to suppress their fears is because their feelings are based in the unconscious level. No amount of willpower or conscious effort is entirely effective to control a fear that comes from this level within the mind.

Hypnosis techniques used in Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) are effective on phobias because they work at the unconscious level of the mind. Hypnosis is an excellent treatment option because it is safe and non-invasive, with no unhealthy side effects.

There are Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP programs available on CD that are remarkable because they can cure any phobia, or even multiple phobias if needed. It isn't necessary to use a program that specifically treats each phobia. This is because a good program will operate on the thought process that triggers every phobia. This makes this sort of program perfect for many people with agoraphobia.

Additionally, a good multi-session program will offer a variety of techniques, which will make the program effective for nearly every user. With a step-by-step process, people can beat their fears with relative ease.

The first step in the hypnotherapy program is becoming calm and relaxed. As a type of therapy, hypnosis has traditionally been used for relaxation, allowing even the most stressed-out people feel rested and relaxed. Once a person feels calm and relaxed, NLP techniques eliminate a phobia by changing the single thought process that causes it.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a sophisticated type of hypnotherapy that utilizes suggestions hidden in a story, metaphor, or conversation to eliminate fears. Ericksonian hypnotherapy is more effective than conventional hypnosis because the unconscious mind finds it more difficult to resist suggestions that are not obvious, than direct post-hypnotic suggestions. Unlike direct suggestions, which merely "tell" your unconscious what to do, indirect suggestions that are embedded in interesting stories and metaphors will guide the unconscious into a desired, worry-free thought process.

Those who find themselves afraid to step outside their door can get their freedom and confidence by using hypnosis therapy. A program with Ericksonian hypnotherapytechniques and NLP techniques is perfect for people who wish to overcome their fears for good. The techniques produce a tremendous benefit for sufferers of agoraphobia and other phobias.
